AI in different sectors- Gabriela Padron

 AI IN DIFFERENT SECTORS

AI in Indonesia: The current state and its opportunities

AI or artificial intelligence are machines that can think like humans and do the basic things we can do. It has been around for some time now but it has really shown up or been recognized more now than ever before. AI can do many incredible things and has benefits, but whether we should trust it completely is a question most people are concerned about.

This month's presentations consisted of areas AI has been taken in, the benefits, and the government's involvement or support. Each group had 2 different sectors. Group 1 did Education and "Fun" life, Group 2 did Sports and the Economy, and Group 3 did Mental health and Careers. What you will be reading next are the things I took away from groups 1 and 3 and what I learned during my part of the presentation for group 2.

Group 1

As I said before, group 1 did AI in education and "fun" life. For education, in order for AI to work the system has to be diverse and promise inclusiveness and equality in order for it to not be biased and provide fairness. This comes hand in hand with informing educators on these systems so they can know how to work them out and make sure that they are being accurate in their work individually without supervision in order to strengthen the trust we put into these machines. As for AI in "fun" life, AI is used in social media and networking to provide more personalized content and relevant recommendations to revolutionize our connections and interactions with others. Virtual assistants such as Siri and Alexa have been around for some time now playing a role in our everyday lives by providing with information we need quickly and entertaining us with things such as sharing jokes.

Group 2

This is the group I was a part of and we focused on artificial intelligence involvement in sports and the economy. As for sports, AI has helped in performance analyses, data-driven insights, and Esports. However, there will always be concerns with privacy, reduced job opportunities, and cyber security threats. The government has been supportive of these AI projects in sports as they have funded research and development as well as providing resources. In order to keep these projects in check they have regulations that can result in fines, bans, and disqualifications if broken. Some of these analytic systems include Sport vu in basketball, Hawk-eye in tennis, and Stat cast in baseball. In football, AI is being used as well in order to find ways to improve equipment to prevent injuries. Concussions are the most common injury in football because of the aggressive tackles but every year helmets are being improved because of the advancements in AI reducing these concussions. For the economy, AI is involved in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and banking. Increased efficiency, innovation, new jobs, improved decision-making, and economic growth are ways AI has impacted our economy. By the year 2030, AI will contribute more than $15 trillion to the global economy.

Group 3

For group 3 they focused on AI's involvement with mental health and careers. The evolution of AI has posed concerns about job opportunities and jobs getting taken over by AI. This is a negative that comes with artificial intelligence but I think people and AI will work together so that there are more jobs with AI. We see AI all around us such as in grocery stores for self-checkout, in fast food places with self-order, and even in airports or airbnbs for self-check-in. For mental health or healthcare as a whole, AI will be very useful for the early detection of disorders, assisted therapy, and the improvement of overall outcomes and accessibility for individuals and communities. I liked that this group did interviews with staff at MDC to ask for their opinions on AI and it was positive. AI helps in sports such as the Miami Basketball League with Anthony Herrera and in IT as well as in MDC with Jose Perez.

After we each presented our PowerPoint, we came together and took about 3 days to shorten our slides to one per person and did 30-second - 1-minute voiceovers in order to have it ready for an AI event on campus.

Overall, each group's presentations were excellent with lots of information that most of us didn't know about. It's kind of scary to know that AI is taking over the world right now but after listening and reading about all the benefits it calmed me down. It's crazy how much these machines can do and how similar they copy our thinking and doings.

To conclude, AI has been around longer than we believe, and its involvement in society, even though it poses concerns, has helped develop many things and bring positive changes. Injuries have been prevented because of AI and disorders can be detected early as well. I like AI and I think that as long as we work together with it we will be fine. This way we can build trust, change anything that goes wrong, and we can supervise it to make sure it is working well. It has helped speed up normal things in life like check-in and check-out, it makes life easier. MDC is growing in this spectrum as they are going to start associates and bachelor degrees for artificial intelligence opening up more opportunities not only for education but jobs as well. Many people don't think about MDC as a great college to go to but for first-year college students, it has a lot to offer and shows you all the things they have in order to give them the resources to think about what they want to do and what they like, especially since most students don't fully decide on a major too fast.
